I \u2013 Program Objectives<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>

\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>

The\u00a0English Proficiency Certificate program aims to offer students a solid foundation of English language skills and a solid preparation for academic study at the university degree level. It attempts to ensure that students have a high level of English to sufficiently help them in their undergraduate study, provide them with an awareness of the cultural context in which they study, and introduce them to the various academic norms and requirements for study in higher education institutions. This is achieved through the following:<\/h4>

  • Ensuring that students have the English language skills to succeed in an undergraduate program of study (minimum B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (henceforth referred to as CEFR).<\/h4><\/li>

  • Providing an environment in which students can gain essential study skills and learn how to achieve learning outcomes through their assessed work.<\/h4><\/li>

  • Enabling students to improve their skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English so that they can cope effectively with academic demands in university and the\u00a0professional needs of the\u00a0labor market.<\/h4><\/li>

  • Facilitating understanding of international cultures and societies and helping students to integrate into the Higher Education system.<\/h4><\/li>

  • Introducing students to a wide range of teaching and learning experiences to enable them to proceed confidently to study at various study levels.<\/h4><\/li><\/ul>

    II \u2013 Target Group: <\/strong><\/span><\/h3>

    English Proficiency courses are designed for:<\/strong><\/h4>

    1. Students who have very limited knowledge and inefficient skills in the\u00a0English language and want to develop their language proficiency skills.<\/h4><\/li>

    2. Pre-intermediate students who want to develop their communication skills orally and in writing<\/h4><\/li>

    3. Intermediate students who are able to communicate but in need of more practice.<\/h4><\/li>

    4. Students who studied English some years ago but want to activate their language skills.<\/h4><\/li>

    5. Students of advanced levels who need English for their professional careers.<\/h4><\/li>

    6. Postgraduate students in various academic disciplines.<\/h4><\/li>

    7. Students who want to develop their linguistic competence in general and specialized English such as commercial, medical, administrative, and scientific fields of study.<\/h4><\/li>

    8. This is very important to students who want to cope with the new development and to use the\u00a0English language at work or elsewhere.<\/h4><\/li><\/ol>

        Fresh students who want to join the program need to take the Placement Test.<\/h4>

        It consists of 100 questions in three sections:<\/h4>

        – Vocabulary \u00a0\u00a0(multiple choice questions)<\/h4>

          Students\u2019 proficiency levels are assessed through a variety of methods including:<\/h4>

          B- English Proficiency Test (Local TOEFL):<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>

          It is a paper-based test designed to assess students\u2019 proficiency in English in the four language skills in light of\u00a0the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The test aims to assess participants\u2019 skills in:<\/h4>

          1. Listening to various general and specific dialogues and talks in order to successfully get the\u00a0main ideas and details.<\/h4><\/li>

          2. Speaking fluently and intelligibly in various contexts, including professional and academic settings.<\/h4><\/li>

          3. Reading various general and specific texts in order to get the\u00a0main ideas and details.<\/h4><\/li>

          4. Grammar and written expression<\/h4><\/li><\/ol>

            \u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>

            C- Test components:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>

            1. Component One:<\/strong> Listening and speaking.<\/h4><\/li>

              D-Test Scoring System:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>

              In its scoring system, it follows the benchmarks of standard international tests such as TOEFL ITP. The Score for the Test Ranges from 677 (the highest) to 310 (the lowest) and is based on three sub-scores:<\/h4>

              • Listening (31- 68).<\/h4><\/li>

              • Structure \u00a0(31- 68).<\/h4><\/li>

              • Reading (31- 67).<\/h4><\/li><\/ul>

                The test includes a total score and three sub-scores \u2013 one for each section. Each section counts equally toward the total score. Only the number of correct answers is counted in each section. The results are called raw scores. The raw scores are then converted into scaled scores.<\/h4>

                The scaled scores in each section are added together, multiplied by 10, and divided by 3 to get the total score as follows:<\/h4>

                VIII – Criteria for Admission <\/strong><\/span><\/h3>

                • The program is open to any student who is interested in obtaining a certificate of proficiency in the English language.<\/h4><\/li>

                • No pre-requisite courses or previous academic degree is required to join the program.<\/h4><\/li>

                • Students have to take a placement test before joining the program.<\/h4><\/li>

                • The duration of each course is 50 hours over 5 weeks.<\/h4><\/li>

                • To join the\u00a0TOEFL preparation program (iBT or PBT), the student has to pass 7 levels in English language study.<\/h4><\/li>

                • The total compulsory credit hours of the program are 800 hours.<\/h4><\/li>
