In a hands-on initiative promoting environmental stewardship, students from the Department of Lands, Water, and Environment and the Department of Animal Production at the Faculty of Agriculture recently completed a practical composting project, converting organic waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer.
The activity was conducted under the expert supervision of Dr. Khaled Al-Maqtari, Ms. Khawla Mohammed Abu Hassan, and Mr. Abdulrahman Abu Hassan.
The project aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and field application by recycling agricultural and livestock byproducts. Students managed the entire decomposition process, which involved:
– Utilizing crop residues, fallen leaves, and cattle\/sheep manure.
– Carefully balancing Carbon-to-Nitrogen (C\/N) ratios.
– Maintaining optimal aeration, temperature, and moisture levels to ensure efficient decomposition.
The supervisors emphasized that this practical application highlights the vital integration between soil science and animal production. “This experience equips our students with essential skills to produce critical agricultural inputs,” the supervisors noted. “By mastering composting, they are learning to reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers while significantly improving soil health.”
Participating students expressed their enthusiasm for the project, noting that such activities are crucial for understanding the Circular Economy. By turning “waste” back into a productive resource, the initiative reinforces the university\u2019s commitment to sustainability and long-term environmental preservation.<\/h3>
