Faculty of Arts and Humanities

The Faculty’s Establishment and Development

Humanities studies at Sana’a University began with its establishment in 1970, under the umbrella of the Faculty of Education, which admitted its first batch of students the same year. The initial number of enrolled students in that year was 64, with the Arts department comprising 12 students. In 1971, a new college was established, which included the departments of arts, education, and sciences. Subsequently, in 1973, the Faculty of Arts was established as an independent institution within Sana’a University, comprising five departments: Arabic language, English language, History, Geography, and Social Sciences. This significant year also marked the graduation of the first group of nine students. Since then, the Faculty has experienced remarkable growth, expanding to encompass twelve specialized fields.

The Faculty’s commitment to academic excellence has extended beyond undergraduate studies to offer postgraduate programs in the field of Arts and Humanities, which allows dedicated graduates to pursue postgraduate diplomas, master’s degrees, and doctoral degrees.

Faculty of Arts and Humanities Library:
The Faculty of Arts Library is one of the largest libraries at the University of Sana’a. It contains a large number of sources and references in various branches of the humanities in both Arabic and foreign languages. Its main objective is to encourage scientific research among the faculty members, staff, regular and parallel system students, and postgraduate students. It aims to provide students with the opportunity to utilize their free time effectively in research, reading, and developing their scientific skills and abilities. Students or researchers can benefit from the library’s services in several ways, including:
 1) Internal Borrowing:

This service allows students and researchers to borrow the sources and references they need and use them inside the library. There are dedicated halls for this purpose.
 2) Photocopying Service:

This service allows students and researchers to photocopy any books or references they may need.
3) Reference Service:
This service provides students with the opportunity to use sources, dictionaries, encyclopedias, lexicons, and knowledge databases. It also assists them in how to use all of this to obtain the information they want in the easiest ways.

4) External Borrowing Service:
This service allows students and researchers to borrow books and take them to their homes. A student of the regular or parallel system can borrow two books for a period not exceeding ten days.  Postgraduate students can borrow four books for the same period.
For a student to obtain the external borrowing service, he/she must first obtain a special borrowing library card. This card can be obtained from the Central Library at the New University Campus after paying the fees and insurance, which is 950 YR for undergraduate students and 5000 YR for postgraduate students. This card is issued once and remains with the student for the duration of his study at the University.

How to access books for reading:
To easily obtain the desired book, you should refer to the different indexes of the library, which are:
 1) Author Index: In this index, the cards are arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name. For example, if the author’s name is Mohammed Mahmoud Al-Zubairi, the card will be filed under the letter “Z” after removing the Arabic definite article “Al-” from the author’s name.
2) Title Index: In this index, the cards are arranged according to the first letter of the book’s title.
 3) Subject Index: In this index, the cards are arranged according to the subject of the book.
 4) Consult the library staff.

Conditions for Borrowing Books from the Faculty Library:

  1. The borrower must be a registered student in the Faculty and have a valid University ID card.
  2. The borrower must return the books on their due dates. In case of delay, the borrower will pay a delay fine of 50 YR per day for each book.
  3. The borrower must keep the borrowed book in good condition. In case of damage, writing in the book, or loss of the book, the borrower will pay three times its original price.
  4. The borrower must keep quiet, maintain order inside the library, and turn off mobile phones. They are not permitted to bring in food or drinks, smoke, or bring children into the library premises.
  5. External borrowing of general references such as encyclopedias, knowledge databases, dictionaries, lexicons, periodicals, rare books, and single-copy books is not permitted.

Dear students, always remember that the book belongs to you and your children after you, so keep it safe and be to the books like a bee to a flower, sucking its nectar without damaging it.

Audio Library for the Visually Challenged People:
This library helps visually challenged people to learn and understand their study materials through listening.

Department of Archaeology Museum:

The Department of Archaeology Museum was established in 1983 in collaboration between the Department of Archaeology and the University Administration. This museum houses many ancient and Islamic Yemeni artifacts, which are distributed in the museum halls as follows:
Mummies Exhibition Hall, Ancient Yemeni Antiquities Exhibition Hall, Islamic Yemeni Antiquities Exhibition Hall, and a hall that is still under preparation, where archaeological findings discovered at the site of Maqwala will be displayed. These findings were uncovered during the archaeological works conducted by the Department of Antiquities in previous years. Additionally, there is a corridor that exhibits various ancient artifacts and enlarged photographs that introduce both ancient and Islamic Yemeni sites and artifacts.
The museum aims to introduce the cultural and civilizational heritage of Yemen from ancient times to the modern era. It contributes to the preservation of cultural and heritage legacies and plays an important role in understanding civilizational and cultural significance. It also instills a sense of belonging, cultural identity, and national pride among students.
