Faculty of Arts & Humanities | SU
Founded in 1970, the Department of Geography and Geoinformatics is one of the leading departments of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The Dept. aims to prepare well-educated people capable of contributing to sustainable development, living up to the needs of the labor market, and addressing geographic issues at the local, regional, and international levels.
What distinguishes the Department is that it provides learning that integrates theoretical aspects and fieldwork activities, has teaching staff of the highest caliber, and has three labs equipped with geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing devices, soil and plotter, and scanners.
The Dept. offers three fields of study: physical geography (environment and natural resources); geographic information science (GIS; spatial data and mapping); and geoinformatics. Students can choose the field of their interest when they have successfully reached the third level of study. Of course, the Dept. keeps updating its learning programs to keep pace with new technological developments and the needs of the labor market.
At the BA level, the study spans over 4 years, upon successful completion of which students are awarded the BA degree in one of the three fields mentioned above. Competent graduates of this department stand a good chance of landing a job in the relevant government bodies, universities, research centers, and the private sector; a better chance of getting a job stands in the institutions that are related to oil, mining, surveying, communications, and urban planning; other possible agencies offering job opportunities are regional and international organizations and civil society organizations. All this mirrors the wide range of jobs available for the graduates of this department and the significance of this field of study.
The Department of Geography and Geoinformatics aspires to achieve a leading position in its field, fostering the integration of geography and geoinformatics with other disciplines. We envision ourselves playing a pioneering role in academic teaching, research, and specialized training across various sub-disciplines of geography and geoinformatics. Our unwavering commitment to academic excellence is reflected in the development and implementation of rigorous academic programs. Furthermore, we actively promote scholarly engagement and advancement by organizing conferences, workshops, and scientific seminars.
The Department seeks to keep pace with the most recent developments in geography so as to be able to prepare a cadre of specialists in this field and its technological devices in order to satisfy the needs of the community and the labor market. Additionally, the Department aims to contribute to the development of the community through providing specialist consultations and holding training workshops aimed at creating a conduit of interaction with the environment and natural resources, as well as applying geographic information systems across the relevant research and services centers and agencies in Yemen.
1. To contribute to the development of knowledge in the field of geography in general and the areas of planning, environment, natural resources, geographical information systems (GIS), and remote sensing devices.
2. To prepare specialists capable of providing services and practical experiences across the different practices of the field.
3. To enable students to appreciate and invest in Yemen’s unique location and its various land and maritime resources in order to ensure sustainable development and ecological balance.
4. To keep developing and designing the curriculum in such a way that takes into consideration the natural and social uniqueness of Yemen’s landforms and the labor market demands for experiences in remote sensing devices and GIS.
5. To cultivate students’ sense of professionalism and leadership to meet the needs of the community and the labor market and to pursue their postgraduate studies.
