Faculty of Arts & Humanities | SU
The Department of Psychology was founded in 1982 and is considered one of the major divisions at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Since its inception, the Department has seen 38 batches of graduates, which included both Yemenis and some other Arab nationalities. More important is the fact that some of the Department’s academic staff as well as graduates were able to stand out as high-profile figures on both local and international levels.
The Department has always sought to prepare highly qualified professionals capable of understanding human behavior and mental operations, analyzing and evaluating personality types, enhancing mental health, developing communication skills, contributing to research development, and thus providing community services. Our students are given opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills that enable them to provide psychological support and counseling, to discover human tendencies and capabilities, to create mental harmony, and to contribute to the creation of quality life on both individual and community levels.
There are three learning programs (bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and doctoral degree) offered by the Department and designed according to progressive study plans integrating knowledge and research in a way tailored to fulfil the requirements of the field and comply with academic standards. At the BA level, students acquire the knowledge and skills that enable them to be specialized scholars or psychological counselors; at the MA and PhD levels, the focus is on the development of academic and research capabilities to prepare research scholars and teaching staff as well.
Graduates have the luxury of job offers across a wide range of health and service institutions, centers offering psychotherapy and counselling, universities, and research centers. All this mirrors the significance of the field of psychology and its role in community services and human development.
We aspire to play a leading role in offering education in the field of psychology in the light of the needs of the community and the labor market as well as the practical application of psychological knowledge and skills to provide counseling and psychotherapy that can ensure community mental health.
We seek to prepare psychologists who are equipped with psychological knowledge and practical experiences that can enable them to keep pace with new developments in this field.
