Preparing qualified teachers and educators, and fostering educational research to serve the community

Department of Mathematics

Academic Programs

Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics Teacher Preparation - Bachelor's Degree in Statistics/Mathematics Teacher Preparation (Pending Accreditation)

The Mathematics Department in the Faculty of Education-Sana'a serves as a fundamental pillar, bridging the gap between deep scientific knowledge and pedagogical proficiency. The department strives to achieve a set of strategic goals, most notably: Preparing qualified educators: Graduating teachers who excel both pedagogically and scientifically, ready to teach mathematics across various educational levels (primary, intermediate, and secondary). Fostering scientific thinking: Equipping students with logical reasoning and problem-solving skills, and enabling them to apply these skills in practical life as well as in other disciplines such as computer science and physics. Preparation for Graduate Studies: Building a solid academic foundation that enables outstanding students to pursue further academic studies (Master's and PhD degrees) in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, or teaching methodologies. Developing Scientific Research Skills: Encouraging faculty members and students to conduct research and studies that contribute to solving educational and technical problems. Community Service: Providing consultations and in-service training programs for teachers to enhance their competencies and update their knowledge regarding modern teaching methods and educational technology.

Vision

Mission

The department strives to enhance its Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral programs to meet societal needs by producing qualified educators in the field of specialization. It aims to equip them with foundational knowledge, scientific and logical thinking, and research skills in mathematics education, while strengthening their practical ability to effectively address daily educational challenges and contribute to both school education and lifelong learning.

Aims

In alignment with the Faculty of Education's goal of preparing competent teachers, the Mathematics Curriculum Department seeks to achieve the following aims through its programs and courses:
1. Qualifying and preparing mathematics teachers prior to service by offering high-quality, advanced training programs for secondary-level mathematics teachers.
2. Developing mathematics teacher preparation programs that align with global standards and meet societal needs for qualified teachers across all educational levels.
3. Conducting educational research on mathematics curricula and instruction, incorporating 21st-century teaching methods, strategies, and models.
4. Conducting research on the use of computers in mathematics instruction, monitoring the integration of technology into mathematics teacher preparation, and focusing on the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in training student teachers enrolled in mathematics teacher preparation programs.
5. Contributing to the training of in-service mathematics teachers through professional development programs that foster skills, values, and positive attitudes toward the teaching profession and the principle of lifelong learning.
6. Providing consultancy services—through department professors and faculty participation in conferences and workshops—to address educational issues related to the development of mathematics curricula, teaching methods, and instructional strategies.
7. Serving the community, its educational and pedagogical institutions, and educational research centers by conducting studies and providing consultations that contribute to improving educational practices in the field and addressing any imbalances within the education system.
8. Emphasizing the ethics and professional conduct of the teaching profession, and ensuring these are embodied by the department's faculty members and student teachers enrolled in its programs.
9. Developing master's and doctoral graduate programs in alignment with internationally recognized standards.
10. Contributing to the development of quality systems across administrative and academic areas; conducting self-assessment processes to ensure the quality of the department's programs; and striving to obtain accreditation for these programs from recognized local bodies and organizations.

Master's Degree in Mathematics Education

The Master's program in Mathematics Curricula and Teaching Methods was established in 1985, with the first cohort graduating in 1987. Recognizing the importance of balancing mathematics as a body of knowledge with the methods used to teach it, specifications were developed for a Master's program in Mathematics Education.

Mission

The Master's program in Mathematics Education aims to prepare highly qualified professionals capable of contributing solutions to issues concerning mathematics and mathematics education, and of enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the educational system in this field. It also seeks to supply various societal institutions—such as universities and research centers—with qualified personnel skilled in scientific research and the development of mathematics, its curricula, and its teaching methods.

Aims

1. Qualifying highly competent and distinguished professionals in the fields of scientific research and mathematics education curriculum design and development.
2. Conducting pioneering scientific research to provide evidence-based solutions to challenges in mathematics education in general, and to the teaching and learning of mathematics in the Republic of Yemen in particular.
3. Enhancing the capabilities of faculty members in the Mathematics Curriculum Department regarding scientific research and teaching, and providing academic consultancy to educational institutions in Yemen.
4. Coordinating and collaborating with relevant institutions and centers—both domestically and internationally—to exchange expertise and enhance performance in the field of mathematics education.
5. Preparing qualified professionals capable of identifying and defining educational issues within the field of mathematics education, and subsequently selecting the most appropriate research methods and tools to address them.
6. Providing opportunities for academic and research development to qualified holders of bachelor's and master's degrees.
