Faculty of Pharmacy | SU
The Department of Medicinal, Pharmaceutical Organic, and Analytical Chemistry plays a pivotal role in drug discovery and development. By bridging fundamental chemistry with pharmacology and other biochemical sciences, the department enables the design of novel therapeutic agents and the synthesis of pharmaceutical substances. It also focuses on analyzing raw materials, pharmaceutical substances, and therapeutic agents—of both natural and synthetic origins—while ensuring the stability, safety, and quality of pharmaceutical products.
The department encompasses the following disciplines:
• Medicinal Chemistry: This field integrates chemistry and pharmacology to design, synthesize, and optimize chemical entities and their structure-activity relationships (SAR) to develop safe and effective medications for disease treatment.
• Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry: This area provides the foundational chemical principles necessary to understand drug structures and synthesize pharmacologically active therapeutic agents.
• Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry: This discipline is essential for ensuring and maintaining the purity, identity, stability, safety, quality, and potency of therapeutic agents.
To achieve innovation and leadership in advancing knowledge, continuous education, and scientific research in pharmaceutical sciences, effectively meeting labor market demands and community needs.
To prepare highly competent and ethically grounded pharmacy graduates who are globally, regionally, and locally competitive in providing healthcare services. This is achieved through excellence in education and scientific research focused on the design, synthesis, and analysis of raw materials and pharmaceutical compounds.
1- Demonstrating advanced knowledge and practical experience in simple and new methods for the synthesis and analysis of raw materials used as starting materials for designing and synthesizing pharmaceutical compounds.
2- Providing students with advanced principles and practical experience in modern methods and techniques of pharmaceutical analysis.
3- Enriching advanced knowledge and skills in medicinal chemistry, focusing on design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of pharmaceuticals.
4- Planning, designing, and conducting pharmaceutical research using appropriate methodologies.
5- Conducting research and studies on specific pharmaceutical active compounds based on applying the scientific basis of research methodologies, ethics, and professional practice.
6- Encouraging students to discover and develop active pharmaceutical substances.
7- Demonstrating communication skills, problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities in the research field.
8- Comprehending reliably literature in the field research and developments of professionalism and long-life learning.
9- Interpreting the work results and information to solve problems.
10- Providing the student with knowledge and skills for writing reports and thesis and publishing papers.
The Master of Medicinal Chemistry is a thesis-based program designed to develop advanced knowledge and research competencies in medicinal chemistry. The curriculum focuses on various facets of drug discovery, design, development, synthesis, structural elucidation, and the biological screening of pharmaceutical substances. The program equips graduates to conduct cutting-edge research and prepares them for leadership, academic, or research positions within universities, pharmaceutical industries, and government institutions.
By integrating rigorous theoretical coursework with hands-on research across diverse areas of medicinal chemistry, the program provides students with the critical tools necessary to excel in senior research and teaching roles. Students engage in intensive pharmacy-related and specialized medicinal chemistry courses, select advanced research topics, and are required to publish their findings in international journals.
