Academic Programs in the Department

Master of Science in Pharmacognosy

Pharmacognosy is one of the oldest medical and pharmaceutical sciences, traditionally encompassing the chemical and biological study of natural substances derived from terrestrial and marine plants, animals, and microbes. This science is characterized by continuous evolution and diversification due to its reliance on a broad range of biological sciences. The renewed interest in teaching and research in this field stems from exploring new horizons for drug development, utilizing biotechnology to improve natural product production, leveraging nutraceuticals and pharmaceutical dietary supplements, evaluating the efficacy of traditional medicine, and expanding the scope of natural-source drugs. Modern pharmacognostic studies integrate advanced disciplines such as biotechnology, enzymology, genetics, pharmacology, and toxicology, in addition to quality control of natural extracts, natural products, and biopesticides. This specialization serves as a fundamental pillar for providing a scientific methodology to evaluate traditional medicine, graduating skilled pharmacists, and achieving research leadership to serve society and the healthcare sector.

Program Vision

Leadership and excellence in pharmacognosy and natural products education and research to graduate skilled researchers and pharmacists capable of developing drugs and serving the community and health sector.

Program Mission

Qualifying and empowering Master's students, providing them with high scientific competence and solid professional ethics by offering a multidisciplinary applied research environment in analysis and quality control of raw materials and natural and pharmaceutical products; meeting the needs of public and private healthcare sectors, pharmaceutical factories, and scientific research centers.

Program Objectives

1- Achieving excellence in education, scientific research, and community services related to pharmacognosy and natural product chemistry.
2- Meeting current and future needs of pharmacy practice and keeping pace with its developments.
3- Developing continuous and innovative research to clarify scientific directions and practical application areas of herbal medicine.
4- Enhancing local and regional pharmaceutical services by delivering safe, effective, and high-quality natural medicines.
5- Exploring local natural materials to find specialized solutions and treatments for endemic diseases.
6- Providing specialized and reliable advisory services to pharmaceutical industries and society at large.
7- Integrating medicinal and natural products chemistry into R&D departments within pharmaceutical industries.
8- Innovating advanced methodologies for extraction, isolation, and quality assurance of active ingredients from natural sources for use in pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements, and cosmetics.
