Ms. Ibtihal Mohammed Hussein Abutalib was awarded a Master’s degree with honors in Linguistics for her thesis titled “Speech Acts in the Diwan ‘Mohammedans‘ by Poet Muath Al-Junaid: A Pragmatic Study,” which was submitted to the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities – Sana’a University. The MA defense was held on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, corresponding to Rabi’ alawwal 11, 1447 Hijri.
The MA Viva-voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Post-Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:
- Ibtisam Hussein Ahmed Al-Mutawakil – Main Supervisor and Member
- Ibrahim Mohammed Saeed Al-Solawi – Internal Examiner
- Abdullah Rajhi Mohammed Ghanem – External Examiner
The thesis included:
- Three chapters: The first chapter was a theoretical overview of speech acts, from ancient to modern times. The second chapter focused on direct speech acts, while the third chapter addressed indirect speech acts, each with five sections covering various types of acts.
- Applied appendices in the form of tables.
- A conclusion.
The thesis reached the following conclusions:
- The diwan (collection of poems) has multiple topics and occasions, reflecting the poet’s sense of responsibility for what is happening around him.
- The poet’s vision and treatment of the diwan’s topics were based on the Quran.
- Pragmatics focuses on the intentions of speech, which are only realized through linguistic communication and the performative force of speech acts.
- The forms of direct and indirect speech acts are numerous.
- There were verses in the diwan’s poems that indicated two speech acts.
The thesis recommended that researchers study the works of poets who have fought the “jihad of the word” for the sake of Allah.
The thesis was examined and recommended by the Viva-Voce Committee for acceptance and approval. The defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, students, and interested individuals, in addition to the candidate’s colleagues and family members.
