PhD Degree Awarded to Ms. Azhar Abdulrahman Raweh in Teaching Methods

Ms. Azhar Abdulrahman Mohammed Raweh was awarded a PhD degree for her dissertation titled, “New Directions in the Yemeni Universities Translation Program: A Comparative Study among Translation Programs at Public and Private Universities in Hodeida,” which was submitted to Department of English Language, Faculty of Education – Sana’a University. The PhD dissertation defense was held on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
The PhD Viva-Voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Post-Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following members:

The study aimed to:
- Conduct a descriptive analytical comparative study of the experiences and perceptions of translation students in Hodeidah universities (public vs. private).
- Identify the gaps in the curriculum and practical training between the two sectors.
The study yielded several significant findings, including:
- Substantial Differences: Students at private universities expressed a greater urgency for curriculum reform and improved training compared to those at Hodeidah University.
- Public universities face challenges due to outdated materials and less effective teaching methods, while private universities benefit from modern resources, which boosts student satisfaction.
- Private universities showed superiority in instructor effectiveness, the use of innovative teaching methods, and the integration of technology, all of which improve student outcomes.
The study concluded with several vital recommendations:
- Modernizing curricula and adding more comprehensive practical training.
- Enhancing textbooks and providing modern resources for public universities.
- Strengthening instructor effectiveness through wide-ranging professional development programs.
- Adopting innovative teaching methods and integrating technology into education.
- Conducting follow-up research to monitor the impact of these reforms on the quality of higher education in Yemen.
The PhD dissertation was examined and recommended by the Viva-Voce Committee for acceptance and approval. The PhD defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, interested students, the candidate’s colleagues, and family members.
