Master’s Degree Awarded to Mr. Abdulsalam Abdulbaqi Al-Junaid in Laboratory Hematology and Blood Transfusion

Mr. Abdulsalam Abdulbaqi Ibrahim Al-Junaid was awarded a Master’s Degree in Hematology and Blood Transfusion with an average of Very Good and a grade of (87.5) for his thesis titled: Evaluation of Coagulation Profiles and Platelets Parameters in Pregnant Women Presenting with Pre-eclampsia in AL-Gomhori Hospital, Sana’a, Yemen, which was submitted to the Department of Laboratory Hematology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences – Sana’a University. The MA defense was held on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.
The MA Viva-voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:
| # | Committee Members | Designation | Position |
| 1 | Prof. Lutfi Abdulsalam Al-Maqtari | Internal Examiner | Chair |
| 2 | Prof. Ahmed Qaed Salem Thabit | Main Supervisor | Member |
| 3 | Dr. Fouad Ahmed Balkam | External Examiner | Member |
The study aimed to evaluate coagulation parameters and platelet indices in pregnant women diagnosed with pre-eclampsia at AL-Gomhori Hospital in Sana’a, Yemen.
The study yielded a number of key findings summarized as follows:
- Pregnant women with pre-eclampsia at AL-Gomhori Hospital demonstrated notable alterations in platelet indices, specifically a reduction in platelet count and an increase in mean platelet volume (MPV).
- Coagulation abnormalities, such as prolonged prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and an elevated INR.
In light of these findings, the researcher recommended the following:
- Implementing routine screening for pregnant women, particularly those at higher risk, such as women over 35, those living in remote rural areas, or those with a history of miscarriage, to enable early detection.
- Considering platelet parameters (platelet count and mean platelet volume) as useful and inexpensive indicators for early diagnosis and monitoring of pre-eclampsia, especially in low-resource settings far from urban medical services.
- Applying routine monitoring of coagulation tests, especially PT and aPTT, for clinical follow-up of pregnant women with pre-eclampsia to prevent severe complications such as eclampsia and deep-vein thrombosis.
The defense session was attended by faculty members, researchers, students, colleagues, and the researcher’s family.
