Mr. Ali Ahmed Hezam Ja\u2018lal <\/strong>was awarded a PhD<\/strong> degree in English Language (Applied Linguistics) <\/strong>for his dissertation titled: A Corpus-Based Study of the English Synonymous Verbs Denoting Change in Light of the Corpus of the Contemporary American English (COCA)<\/em><\/strong>, which was submitted to the Department of English, Faculty of Languages \u2013 Sana\u2019a University. The dissertation defense was held on Wednesday, February 11, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The PhD Viva-Voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:<\/p>\n

The dissertation aimed to:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Identify similarities and differences among the English synonymous verbs denoting change: change, alter, adapt, adjust,<\/em> and modify<\/em>, through analysis based on the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The study yielded several key findings summarized as follows:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Noticeable similarities and variations were found among the verbs in terms of overall \u200e\u200e<\/li>\n
    • Differences existed in distribution across text types, nominal and adverbial \u200ecollocations, semantic and grammatical patterns.\u200e<\/li>\n
    • Absolute synonymy does not exist in English; therefore, words with similar \u200emeanings should be classified as near-synonyms rather than exact equivalents.\u200e<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      In light of these findings, the researcher recommended the following:\u200e<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Highlighting the importance of corpus linguistics in enhancing English language \u200eteaching and learning, and improving linguistic competence for learners of English \u200eas a foreign language (EFL).\u200e<\/li>\n
      • Integrating corpus tools such as COCA into classroom instruction.\u200e<\/li>\n
      • Incorporating corpus-based activities into language curricula and teacher training \u200e\u200e<\/li>\n
      • Expanding future research by comparing British and American varieties of English \u200eusing additional linguistic corpora.\u200e<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

         <\/p>\n

        The dissertation defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, and specialists, students, colleagues, and the researcher\u2019s family.<\/p>\n
