Ms. Alimah Ibrahim Mohammed Al-Selwi \u200e <\/strong>was awarded a PhD<\/strong> degree for her dissertation titled: The Impact of Greek and Roman Myths on Shakespeare’s Selected Tragedies\u200e<\/em><\/strong>, which was submitted to the Department of English, Faculty of Arts and Humanities \u2013 Sana\u2019a University. The dissertation defense was held on Saturday\u200e, February 14, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The PhD Viva-Voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:<\/p>\n

The dissertation aimed to:<\/p>\n

  • Identify the myths used by William Shakespeare in his plays Hamlet, Macbeth, and \u200eKing Lear.\u200e<\/li>\n
  • Analyze and examine how these myths were employed.\u200e<\/li>\n
  • Compare the use and function of mythological concepts in the Greek and Roman eras, \u200eShakespeare\u2019s era, and the modern era.\u200e<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The study yielded several key findings summarized as follows:<\/p>\n

    • \u200eShakespeare used ancient myths as a tool to explore enduring human questions across \u200edifferent ages.\u200e<\/li>\n
    • In Hamlet: the search for truth in a confusing world mirrors the proliferation of fake \u200enews and rumors that leave individuals uncertain.\u200e<\/li>\n
    • In Macbeth: the cost of ambition when it turns into greed reflects many modern \u200eeconomic and political scandals driven by avarice.\u200e<\/li>\n
    • In King Lear: the themes of family conflict and social justice resonate with \u200econtemporary issues in family relationships\u2014especially those concerning the \u200eelderly\u2014as well as economic injustice in modern times.\u200e<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The dissertation defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, and specialists, students, colleagues, and the researcher\u2019s family.<\/p>\n
