Mr. Zayed Hussein Saleh Ali Al-Mudhaffar \u200e<\/strong>was awarded a PhD<\/strong> degree in English Literature <\/strong>for his dissertation titled: Change and Heroism in George Bernard Shaw\u2019s Plays\u200e<\/em><\/strong>, which was submitted to the Department of English Language, Faculty of Arts and Humanities \u2013 Sana\u2019a University. The dissertation defense was held on Wednesday, 15 Ramadan 1447 Hijri, corresponding to March 4, 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The PhD Viva-Voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:<\/p>\n

The dissertation aimed to:<\/p>\n

  • Examine Shaw\u2019s redefinition of the concept of heroism by analyzing how characters \u200esuch as Joan, Eliza, and Bluntschli embody courage through realism, rationality, \u200eand social responsibility rather than traditional ideals of glory, mysticism, or \u200e\u200e<\/li>\n
  • Investigate the theme of change, whether personal, social, or institutional, as \u200edramatized in the selected plays, highlighting how Shaw used transformation as a \u200etool to critique existing systems and propose alternative models of progress.\u200e<\/li>\n
  • Explore the relationship between Shaw\u2019s dramatic vision and his ideological \u200ecommitments to socialism, feminism, anti-romanticism, and anti-imperialism, \u200edemonstrating how these ideologies intersect in his redefinition of heroism.\u200e<\/li>\n
  • Employ a comparative analytical framework that places the plays Saint Joan, \u200ePygmalion, and Arms and the Man within a unified intellectual context \u200ereflecting Shaw\u2019s dramatic philosophy.\u200e<\/li>\n
  • Assess the contemporary relevance of Shaw\u2019s vision of heroism and change by \u200econnecting his dramatic critiques with modern debates on gender equality, \u200emilitarism, institutional authority, and cultural reform.\u200e<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The study yielded several key findings summarized as follows:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Shaw dismantled traditional heroic models based on romantic illusions, military valor, and religious asceticism, establishing a modern concept that can be described as \u201cpragmatic heroism.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Through analysis of Arms and the Man<\/em>, Pygmalion<\/em>, and Saint Joan<\/em>, Shaw redefined courage as a commitment to rationality, honesty, and social responsibility.<\/li>\n
    • The study demonstrated how Shaw used the transformations of his protagonists\u2014such as Captain Bluntschli\u2019s professional realism, Eliza Doolittle\u2019s female self-determination, and Joan of Arc\u2019s rational challenge to authority\u2014as catalysts for broader personal and societal change.<\/li>\n
    • The dissertation concluded that Shaw\u2019s \u201cdrama of ideas\u201d<\/strong> functions as a platform for intellectual awakening, offering conceptual models for addressing modern conflicts related to nationalism, gender inequality, and institutional corruption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

       <\/p>\n

      In light of these findings, the researcher recommended the following:\u200e<\/p>\n

      • Encouraging further studies exploring Shaw\u2019s broader dramatic works, as the present \u200eresearch focused on only three plays.\u200e<\/li>\n
      • Investigating the performance history of Shaw\u2019s plays, since this study concentrated \u200eprimarily on the literary text rather than theatrical performance.\u200e<\/li>\n
      • Conducting research exploring additional dimensions of Shaw\u2019s drama, such as \u200ereligion or science, beyond the feminist, socialist, and anti-imperialist themes \u200eemphasized in this study.\u200e<\/li>\n
      • Undertaking comparative studies between Shaw and contemporaries such as Henrik Ibsen or \u200eBertolt Brecht, or examining his works within post-colonial frameworks to highlight the global \u200eresonance of his anti-imperialist vision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        The dissertation defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, and specialists, students, colleagues, and the researcher\u2019s family.<\/p>\n
