Researcher Waleed Qasim Abdulmajeed Farea <\/strong>was awarded a PhD<\/strong> degree in Medical Microbiology <\/strong>for his dissertation titled: The Impact of Genetic and Environmental Factors on Autoimmune Hepatitis among Yemeni Patients<\/em><\/strong>, which was submitted to the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences\u2013Sana\u2019a University. The dissertation defense was held on Saturday, July 18, 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The PhD Viva-Voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:<\/p>\n

The dissertation aimed to identify the genetic and environmental factors associated with autoimmune hepatitis among Yemeni patients and to investigate their contribution to the development of the disease, with the goal of improving diagnostic approaches, strengthening preventive measures, and reducing disease-related complications.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The study yielded several important findings. It demonstrated a strong association between autoimmune hepatitis and the combined effect of genetic susceptibility and exposure to certain environmental risk factors, including qat chewing, exposure to pesticides and toxic substances, and the use of specific medications. The findings also revealed a higher prevalence of the disease among individuals carrying particular alleles of the HLA-A, HLA-B, and HLA-DRB1 genes. In addition, the study found higher rates of autoimmune hepatitis among residents of temperate and hot climatic regions.<\/p>\n

The dissertation recommended strengthening public awareness programs addressing the major risk factors associated with autoimmune hepatitis, particularly qat chewing and exposure to pesticides and toxic substances. It also emphasized the importance of early diagnosis based on established scientific methods and diagnostic criteria to minimize disease complications. Furthermore, the study called for additional specialized research to expand understanding of the genetic and clinical aspects of autoimmune hepatitis, thereby contributing to the development of more effective diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.<\/p>\n

The dissertation defense was attended by a number of academics, postgraduate students, researchers, as well as the researcher’s colleagues and family members.<\/p>\n
