Training Program at the Water and Environment Center (WEC) for Water Institutions in Seven Governorates on Rainwater Harvesting in Urban Areas

Sana’a – January 19, 2025

Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Al-Qasim Mohammed Abbas, Rector of Sana’a University, the training program on rainwater harvesting in urban areas was launched today, Sunday, 19th of January 2025. The program targets staff from water and sanitation institutions in the governorates of the Sana’a, Taiz, Amran, Al-Bayda, Lahj, Raymah, and Al-Dhale’e.

The program, which is held at the Water and Environment Center at Sana’a University, will continue from January, 19th to 21st.

The objective of the program is to strengthen the capabilities of participating water institutions in managing water resources and applying rainwater harvesting techniques in urban areas to address water scarcity challenges in Yemen and to enhance water supply for these institutions.

The training includes theoretical sessions, interactive workshops, and field visits to rainwater harvesting sites, such as groundwater well-feeding dams, rainwater harvesting systems for residential areas and schools, and water harvesting in traditional orchards in Old Sana’a.

A team of Yemeni experts and academics specializing in water and environmental fields will lead the program.

This program is the result of collaborative efforts between the Water and Environment Center, the Ministry of Electricity and Water, the Social Fund for Development, the Comprehensive Development Research Center, and the IHE Delft Institute in the Netherlands, with funding from the Dutch government.

The program is expected to contribute to:

• Enhancing the efficiency of workers in water institutions in rainwater harvesting techniques.

• Facilitating the exchange of experiences and knowledge between participants from various institutions.

• Supporting sustainable development efforts in Yemen and contributing to water security.
