Discussion of MA Research Proposal in Translation Presented by the Researcher, Nassim Abdullah Amer

Sunday, 02 November 2024

The Seminar Committee of the Department of the Translation and Its Application at CCTLT held a seminar to discuss the MA research proposal and translation submitted by the researcher Nassim Amer titled:

Motivation Choices of Professional Translators in Translating Magazine Articles from English to Arabic: Forced Migration Review as a Case-in-Point

The Seminar Committee comprised the following Professors:

  1. Prof. Ibraheem Tagaddeen

  2. Prof. Mujeeb Qasim

  3. Abdulwadood Annuzaili

  4. Faisal AlDawli

During the Seminar, the researcher presented a clear and detailed MA proposal, highlighting the research problem, objectives, and questions. She discussed the significance of translation in humanitarian contexts and the translators’ motives for choosing certain linguistic expressions and terms when translating magazine articles between English and Arabic.  She highlighted the most important strategies that translators use to convey the meaning, implications, and connotations of words and phrases.

Assoc. Prof. Ibraheem Tagaddeen, the Center Director, emphasized the importance of using the Critical Discourse Analysis methods in analyzing the translation of the humanitarian and political texts that discuss forced migration in conflict zones within the Arab world in general and texts focused on forced displacement of the Palestinian people from the occupied territories, in particular.

These modern methods of critical analysis assist in unearthing the hidden ideological agenda behind translators’ choices of words and linguistic expressions that reflect the translator’s identity and orientation. Accordingly, this can help in assessing, the accuracy, credibility, and quality of the translated texts published in these magazines.

Then, the seminar committee discussed the components of the proposal submitted by the researcher and praised the researcher’s efforts in preparing the proposal. On the other hand, the proposal was enriched with valuable suggestions from the head of the department Dr. Abdullah Annuzaili, and the other committee members. After that, the committee approved the proposal and recommended the researcher make the necessary amendments to start the preparation of this scientific thesis. The seminar was attended by Assoc. Prof.  Abbas Mutahar, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Languages, Dr. Yahia Obeid, Deputy Director of The Center, several faculty members, and researchers.
