The Seminar Committee of the Department of Translation and its Applications at CCTLT held a seminar today, Wednesday, 10/06/1446 AH, corresponding to 11/12/2024, to discuss the Master’s thesis proposal in translation submitted by the researcher, Saba’a Mohammed Mubarak Al-Arshani, titled:
A Comparative Analysis of Translation Strategies Employed by Specialists and Non-Specialist Translators: A Case Study of the Arabic Translation of Harold F. Jacob’s “Kings of Arabia ”
The seminar committee was composed of the following faculty members from the department:
• Assoc. Prof. Ibraheem Tagaddeen
• Dr. Abdulwadood Annuzaili
• Dr. Ali Abdullah Al-Ghail
• Dr. Faisal Al-Dawli
During the Seminar, the researcher presented a clear and detailed MA proposal, highlighting the research problem, objectives, and questions. She discussed the importance of translation in historical contexts. She emphasized the need for translators to be familiar with the translation strategies that can ensure the accurate transfer of meanings, ideas, and cultural elements from the SL to the TL. The researcher also addressed the challenges faced by non-specialist translators when attempting to render culture-specific items in historical texts.
Assoc. Prof. Ibraheem Tagaddeen, the Center’s Director, highlighted the importance of investigating translations of books related to Yemen’s historical and cultural heritage, ensuring the quality of translation and avoiding issues that might affect readers’ understanding of Yemen’s history, heritage, and cultural traditions. He emphasized the need to use appropriate strategies to convey the meanings of words and terms and their intended implications with author-based accuracy and reader-oriented acceptability.
Afterward, the seminar committee discussed the elements of the plan presented by the researcher and praised her efforts in preparing the proposal. Dr. Abdulwadood Annuzaili, the head of the department, emphasized that historical texts pose significant challenges for translators. By using appropriate strategies, translators can provide a comprehensive view of the translated text. The committee approved the research plan and recommended that the researcher make the necessary corrections and revisions in preparation for drafting the thesis. The seminar was attended by Dr. Yahya Obaid, the Deputy Director of the Center, Dr. Faisal Al-Dawli, head of the translation unit, and several faculty members and researchers.
