Discussion of MA Research Proposal in Translation Presented by the Researcher/ Afnan An-Nahari

The Department of Translation and its Applications held a seminar to discuss the Master’s Research Proposal submitted by the researcher, Afnan Ali Mohammed An-Nahari, entitled: “Cultural Manipulation of Children’s Literature Dubbing from English into Arabic: A Translation Quality Assessment of Extra-linguistic Cultural References in The Simpsons.“

The researcher presented a detailed and clear overview of her proposed research plan. She discussed the significance of studying the specific characteristics of dubbing children’s films produced in English and dubbed into Arabic. She also explored modern dubbing techniques and the strategies employed by translators (dubbing translators) to convey foreign cultural elements to Arab children in a manner that aligns with Arab and Islamic culture. Furthermore, the researcher highlighted the research gap in the field of audiovisual translation and presented the research objectives, questions, and the mixed method approach (quantitative and qualitative) that she will employ to achieve the research objectives.
Following the presentation, the seminar committee discussed the elements of the research plan presented by the researcher and commended her efforts in preparing the research proposal. Dr. Ibraheem Tagaddeen emphasized the importance of the research topic in light of the cultural diversity in the age of globalization amidst the new waves of cultural invasion, highlighting the impact of foreign cultural elements contained in dubbed cartoons on the culture and identity of our children. He stressed the need to employ appropriate translation methods that contribute to preserving the cultural identity of Arab-Islamic societies. The committee enriched the plan with valuable suggestions to improve the quality of the study. Finally, the committee approved the research proposal and recommended that the researcher make the necessary corrections and modifications in preparation for starting to write the thesis.
