Department Mission

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is dedicated to training and qualifying high-caliber dental professionals who are fully equipped to deliver exceptional, internationally recognized clinical services in diagnosis, treatment planning, and advanced surgical interventions. The Department is committed to fostering an integrated academic, clinical, and research environment that fully complies with local and regional quality assurance and accreditation standards while actively serving the community.

Department Aims

1. To prepare highly qualified specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery by equipping them with the advanced scientific knowledge, clinical competencies, and professional skills required for competent and ethical practice.
2. To continuously develop and enhance the curriculum while promoting clinical and scientific research skills in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, in line with advances in the discipline and the evolving needs of society and the healthcare sector.
3. To deliver high-quality postgraduate programs that prepare dentists to competently diagnose and manage complex oral and maxillofacial conditions and perform specialized reconstructive and aesthetic surgical procedures in accordance with internationally recognized standards and best clinical practices.
4. Applying values, traditions, and ethics in practicing the profession of oral and maxillofacial surgery while promoting self-directed and lifelong learning and continuous professional development.

Academic Programs in the Department

Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S.)

Master of Clinical Dentistry (M.C.D.) in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

This is a three-year master's program encompassing theoretical, clinical, and research components. It is designed for dental graduates seeking to advance their careers through specialized training. Students are required to complete and defend a thesis at the end of the program. Upon successful completion of all requirements, graduates will be fully equipped to practice as qualified professionals in this field.

Program Mission

The program seeks to provide advanced knowledge and skills in oral and maxillofacial surgery through comprehensive theoretical educational curricula and rigorous clinical training offered over the designated period of study.

Program Objectives

1. Providing the basic sciences and developing contemporary specialized knowledge in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
2. Developing surgical skills and mastering radiological interpretation to enhance diagnostic capabilities and the management of medical cases.
3. Enabling students to acquire the necessary knowledge for working within multidisciplinary teams to treat surgical cases, pursuing continuous education, and promoting scientific research.

Program Requirements

1. Passing all designated course and core subject examinations successfully.
2. Completing all program milestones, clinical training requirements, and the successful defense of the thesis to qualify for graduation.
3. Publishing at least one research paper in a peer-reviewed international scientific journal.

Ph.D. in Clinical Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The Ph.D. program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Faculty of Dentistry, Sana'a University, is the first of its kind in Yemen. Developed as a cornerstone of the faculty’s strategic advancement plan, the program fulfills the aspirations of master’s degree holders seeking advanced academic pursuits. It focuses on enhancing candidates' capabilities in scientific research methodologies and clinical studies, equipping them to become specialized consultants in oral and maxillofacial surgery or to pursue careers in university academia. The program duration ranges from two to four years.

Program Mission

The Ph.D. program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is dedicated to cultivating advanced clinical consultants equipped with exceptional scientific, clinical, and research acumen. The program prepares graduates to deliver exemplary therapeutic and surgical interventions utilizing cutting-edge technologies and high-quality standards. This is achieved through a highly qualified research faculty and a competitive academic environment that fosters creativity and innovation, thereby meeting market demands and serving local and regional communities.

Program Objectives

1. Equipping students with advanced scientific reasoning regarding the etiology, prevention, and management of oral and maxillofacial surgical diseases, alongside mastering diverse therapeutic and surgical interventions.
2. Developing students' competencies in conducting high-impact scientific research and actively participating in academic instruction and pedagogy.
3. Enabling students to engage in lifelong self-directed learning within both the clinical application and research domains of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
4. Providing students with the capacity to acquire comprehensive foundational knowledge in surgical and applied sciences, alongside critical medical insights related to oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Program Requirements

1. Completing and defending a clinical thesis in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
2. Conducting a seminar prior to scheduling the thesis defense.
3. Publishing a research paper in a local journal.
4. Publishing a research paper in an internationally indexed journal.
