Laboratory Medicine Program

The Laboratory Medicine Program is one of the earliest academic programs at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. It was first introduced at Sana’a University in 1978, and the first cohort graduated in 1979. The program aims to prepare scientifically and practically qualified graduates to work efficiently in various departments of medical laboratories, including medical microbiology, biochemistry, hematology, immunology, parasitology, blood banking, and molecular biology. Graduates are trained to perform laboratory tests accurately, identify pathogenic microorganisms, conduct antimicrobial susceptibility testing, operate and maintain laboratory equipment, apply quality management and biosafety standards, and interpret laboratory results in relation to clinical conditions to support diagnosis and treatment. They are also expected to uphold professional ethics, engage in continuous learning, work effectively within healthcare teams, and contribute to research and the improvement of laboratory services. The program has produced more than 3,000 graduates at Sana’a University. Postgraduate programs (MSc and PhD) have also been established in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Parasitology, and Hematology.
