The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences was established in Sana’a under Republican Decree No. (50) of 1982 and is the first and largest medical faculty in Yemen. It admitted its first Medicine and Surgery cohort in 1983/1984 and moved to its current campus in 1989/1990 with support from the State of Kuwait. The campus includes lecture halls, auditoriums, medical laboratories, a Clinical Skills Center, and a Center for Continuing Medical Education.
From 1983 to 2000, the Faculty offered five programs: Medicine and Surgery, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Dentistry. In 2001/2002, Pharmacy and Dentistry became independent faculties.
By 2022, the Faculty had graduated 10,578 professionals, including 5,744 Medicine and Surgery graduates up to 2020, while 3,854 students were enrolled during the 2022/2023 academic year. The Medicine and Surgery program requires six years of study followed by a one-year internship and awards the MBBS degree, while the other undergraduate programs require four years followed by the prescribed internship.
The Faculty is committed to academic excellence, scientific research, innovation, and creativity. It has highly qualified academic staff, many of whom graduated from internationally recognized universities, and offers Master's and PhD programs in various basic and clinical medical specialties, in addition to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) clinical program. The Faculty's strategic plan emphasizes meeting the National Academic Reference Standards (NARS) and international accreditation standards (WFME) for the Medicine and Surgery program. The MBBS program has obtained national academic program accreditation from the Council for Academic Accreditation and Quality Assurance (CAQA), while the Faculty continues to pursue international accreditation from WFME, strengthening its role in serving the community and advancing medical education and healthcare in Yemen and the region.
