The dissertation aimed to explore the grammatical thought of Sibawayh and Al-Mubarrad, highlighting methodological distinctions, points of divergence, and the developmental trajectory between their approaches. It further sought to uncover the underlying factors contributing to these developments and to illuminate Al-Mubarrad’s contributions to the field of Arabic grammar.
The study yielded several significant findings regarding the evolution of grammatical thought in the work of Al-Mubarrad. These include:
- There was a transformation of grammatical reasoning, marked by a shift from an emphasis on the intrinsic nature of language toward a framework grounded in logic, rationalism, and philosophy.
- There was an increased focus on grammatical reasoning. It gained prominence to the extent that it paralleled the attention afforded to grammatical rules themselves.
- The concept of the grammatical agent (amil) developed and expanded. It became increasingly central to syntactic analysis, with grammatical judgments progressively constructed on its basis.
- There was a significant intensification of grammatical disputes, which reached their peak in the works of Al-Mubarrad.
The researcher presented several recommendations in his dissertation, including the need to conduct further research on the grammatical contributions of grammarians situated between Sibawayh and Al-Mubarrad as well as their contributions to the study of meaning.
The dissertation defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, students, interested participants, and the researcher’s colleagues.
