Program Aims

  1. Offer the opportunity for students to engage in translation, interpretation and research methodologies as a base for developing their academic and professional skills in the field of Translation studies.
  2. Familiarize students with the nature, uses and varieties of Arabic and English in the wider contexts.
  3. Develop students’ skills in close reading, text analysis and communicating clearly and effectively in both English and Arabic in oral and written forms.
  4. Develop students’ understanding of both English and Arabic culture and history.

Program Mission

The MA Translation program seeks to prepare well-trained graduates equipped with the necessary knowledge and professional skills in Translation, interpretation and research, by offering a stimulating learning experience invigorated by the use of recent technology, and providing opportunities for employment in both private and public sectors.

A student is required to prepare and defend a thesis, which carries a weight of (6) credit hours.

Admission Requirements for the Program:

Students may be admitted to the MA program in Translation after completing the following:

  1. Obtaining BA degree in Translation or English from a recognized university.
  2. Having an accumulative average in the BA not less than 65%.
  3. Passing a written test and an oral interview to be held by the department.
  4. Meeting the requirements of Sana’a University and the Ministry of Higher Education.

Graduation Requirements:

Students are eligible to obtain an MA degree only after completion of the following requirements:

  1. Passing all the courses in the study plan.
  2. Securing an accumulative average not less than 75%.
  3. Conducting a research in translation and passing all its required tests successfully.
  4. Completing the minimum period for obtaining the degree and not exceeding the maximum duration as prescribed in the study plan in accordance with university academic bylaw.
  5. Students who get more than 64% and less than 75% will be awarded a postgraduate diploma in Translation.

Graduate Attributes:

A graduate holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Translation from the Faculty of Languages should demonstrate the following attributes:

  1. Proficient in both specialization languages (Arabic & English), including reading, writing, and speaking.
  2. Able to differentiate between fundamental concepts in language, literature, and translation studies.
  3. Able to use the specialization language, incorporating all four skills across diverse professional contexts.
  4. Capable to analyze and critique texts in both source and target languages in an academic and professional manner.
  5. Able to communicate skillfully in both written and verbal forms.
  6. Able to translate various types of texts (political, scientific, economic, etc.) accurately and faithfully.
  7. Proficient in producing innovative and scholarly research papers, adhering to the principles of academic honesty and research integrity.
  8. Capable to apply and employ specialized knowledge in professional practice within relevant fields.
  9. Proficient in using computers and technological applications to remain abreast of modern scientific and technical developments in translation-related applications.
  10. Able to engage positively with diverse cultures while upholding religious, cultural, and social values.
