Under the auspices of Prof. Al-Qasim Mohammad Abbas, Rector of Sana’a University, and Prof. Abdulmalik Mohammad Eissa, Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, the Community Service Unit, in collaboration with the Social Work Department and the Al-Shafqa Foundation for the Care of Kidney Failure and Cancer Patients, organized an awareness event addressing the dangers of cancer, encompassing its causes, prevention strategies, and treatment modalities.
The event featured notable attendees, including Prof. Sukina Ahmed Mohammad Hashim, Vice Dean for Community Service Affairs and Head of the Social Work Department; Dr. Fahd Al-Ahmadi, Vice Dean for Quality Assurance Affairs; Dr. Ahmed Mutahhar, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies; Prof. Ali Saeed, Vice Dean for Student Affairs; and Mr. Wathiq Al-Qurashi, Executive Director of the Al-Shafqa Foundation.
This event was part of the field training program for fourth-level students in the Social Work Department, serving as a practical application in organizing and conducting events—an essential component of the professional practice of social specialists. Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Bakari, a representative from Al-Thawra Hospital in Sana’a, delivered a thorough presentation that covered critical aspects of cancer, including its causes, symptoms, prevention strategies, and treatment options. He emphasized the vital role that social workers play in supporting cancer patients, particularly given the pervasive belief among patients and their families that a cancer diagnosis equates to a terminal prognosis.
Additionally, Ms. Fatima Al-Maqalih, a psychological specialist at Al-Shafqa Foundation, commended the students from Sana’a University who participated in the training program and highlighted the significant contributions of social work in alleviating the hardships faced by cancer patients. A field training student from the Social Work Department also presented an overview of the roles social workers fulfill in assisting cancer patients.
The event concluded with a ceremony during which Al-Shafqa Foundation honored the students from the Social Work Department for their exemplary contributions to supporting cancer patients within the foundation. In her closing remarks, Prof. Sukina Ahmed Hashem expressed her sincere gratitude to Al-Shafqa Foundation for their supportive engagement with the training students and for facilitating the implementation of the field training program. She underscored the crucial role of social workers in the healthcare sector, particularly in their work with cancer patients.
