The study aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the forms and strategies of negation in Sana’ani dialect, highlighting similarities and differences between this dialect, Modern Standard Arabic, and other Arabic dialects.
The study yielded a number of key findings, summarized as follows:
-
It identified and described the forms, positions, and functions of negation markers in Sana’ani dialect, demonstrating how these markers interact with different syntactic structures.
-
The analysis showed that negation in Sana’ani dialect cannot be explained by a single syntactic position (NegP); instead, it involves two distinct positions—one located above TP and another below it.
-
The study established that the negation particle ma functions as the head of the NegP, while the suffix –sh serves an emphatic role within the negation phrase.
-
It examined the semantic interpretation of ambiguous negative sentences, with particular attention to the constructions ma…–sh and mish.
-
The research provided a comprehensive morphological, syntactic, and semantic account of negation in Sana’ani dialect, highlighting the distinctive patterns and features that characterize this variety
In light of such findings, the researcher recommended conducting further studies on:
-
Analyzing the phonological properties of negation in Sana’ani dialect.
-
Investigating the semantic interpretation of negation in real communicative contexts within Sana’ani dialect.
-
Comparing negation patterns across different Yemeni dialects to identify regional and historical variations.
