Historical Background

About the Faculty

The Faculty of Physical Education was established as one of the faculties of Sana'a University pursuant to Republican Decree No. (26), issued on 27 April 2008, marking the culmination of a long-standing aspiration to establish an academic institution dedicated to preparing qualified professionals in the field of sports. This aspiration began with the establishment of the Higher Institute of Physical and Sports Education under Republican Decree No. (4) of 1996, which was directly affiliated with the Minister of Youth and Sports. The Institute admitted its first cohort during the 1996/1997 academic year, enrolling 35 students. This was followed by the second cohort in 1997/1998 with 60 students, the third cohort in 1998/1999 with 60 students, and the fourth cohort in 1999/2000 with 70 students. The Institute continued graduating qualified professionals until 2008, when the previous decree was repealed and the Institute was incorporated into Sana'a University under the name "Faculty of Physical Education." Consequently, it became subject to the Universities Law and emerged as one of the University's leading faculties. The Faculty represented a major milestone in the development of physical education in Yemen. It attracted distinguished academic staff and provided students with twinning agreements and academic cooperation opportunities with leading Arab universities, including the University of Jordan, Helwan University, and the University of Algiers. Over time, Yemeni academics gradually replaced expatriate faculty members, and today the teaching staff consists entirely of Yemeni academics. A significant number of the Faculty's top graduates joined the academic staff after completing their postgraduate studies. To date, the Faculty has graduated 22 cohorts whose members have demonstrated outstanding competence across a wide range of institutions. Each year, the Faculty admits between 50 and 80 male and female students from various governorates of Yemen, who are selected through competitive entrance examinations to ensure the admission of the most qualified applicants. The Faculty is committed to preparing academically and professionally qualified graduates capable of contributing to community service and scientific research at both the national and international levels. In keeping with rapid developments in higher education, the Faculty continuously strives to enhance the competencies of its academic staff through ongoing workshops focused on curriculum development, teaching methodologies, and assessment practices. As a culmination of these continuous efforts, at the beginning of 2021, the President of Sana'a University, Professor Dr. Al-Qasim Mohammed Abbas, issued a decision establishing the Supreme Committee for Self-Assessment. Accordingly, specialized self-assessment teams were formed within the Faculty to evaluate its academic programs according to their respective disciplines, in line with the eight standards adopted in the Accreditation and Quality Assurance Council's Guide for Higher Education Institutions in the Republic of Yemen.
