Master’s Degree Awarded to Researcher Latifa Faisal Al-Sharabi in Translation with Distinction

Researcher Latifa Faisal Saeed Al‑Sharabi was awarded a Master’s Degree in Translation with an average of Excellent and a grade of (95%) for her thesis titled: Quality Assessment of Translations Generated by Google Gemini When Translating Legal Documents between Arabic and English: A Case Study of Rental Contracts, which was submitted to the Community Center for Translation and Language Teaching (CCTLT) – Sana’a University. The MA defense was held on Monday, August 17, 2026.
The MA Viva-voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:
• Prof. Abdou Ahmed Mounassar– Thamar University – External Examiner and Committee Chair.
• Assoc. Prof. Abdulwadood Ahmed Annuzaili – Sana’a University – Internal Examiner and Committee Member.
• Assoc. Prof. Mujeeb Ali Murshid Qasim – Supervisor and Committee Member.
The thesis aimed to:
Explore the pressing need to evaluate the quality, capabilities, and limitations of AI-assisted translation tools, such as Google Gemini, in the field of legal translation.
Evaluate the quality of Google Gemini in translating lease agreements between Arabic and English and identify its capabilities, limitations, and areas for improvement based on students’ responses and translation quality.
The study adopted a mixed-method approach using a convergent parallel design within a descriptive-analytical framework that combined quantitative and qualitative techniques. The study sample consisted of 30 postgraduate translation students and 4 professional translation experts purposively selected from different universities in Sana’a.
Data were collected through a carefully designed translation test, a questionnaire, and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaire measured students’ perceptions of the accuracy, fluency, clarity, and adequacy of Google Gemini’s outputs, while the translation test assessed linguistic, contextual, and stylistic difficulties using a five-level rating scale.
The study provided detailed and comprehensive data describing Google Gemini’s capabilities and shortcomings in legal translation. It also evaluated its quality in translating lease agreements between Arabic and English and identified its capabilities, limitations, and potential areas for improvement.
In light of the findings, the study recommended considering Google Gemini translation as a useful tool for preparing initial translation drafts, while emphasizing the need to further develop AI-assisted translation technologies for legal applications.
It also recommended conducting future studies to analyze the performance of other large language models, such as ChatGPT-4, DeepSeek, and Qwen, as well as specialized legal language models, in translating different types of legal documents.
The thesis defense was attended by faculty members, researchers, students, and interested participants as well as the researcher’s colleagues and family members.
