PhD Degree Awarded to Researcher Akram Al-Uzair in Arabic Language Curriculum and Teaching Methods
Researcher Akram Mohammed Mohammed Al-Uzair was awarded a PhD degree in Arabic Language Curriculum and Teaching Methods for his dissertation titled: Effectiveness of a Program Based on Academic Cognitive Approach in Developing Reading Comprehension and Generative Thinking Skills among Secondary School Students in the Capital Secretariat, Sana’a, which was submitted to the Department of Arabic Studies, Faculty of Education– Sana’a University. The MA defense was held on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
The PhD Viva-Voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:
- Suad Salem Al-Sab’a – Sana’a University – Internal Examiner and Committee Chair.
- Abdullah Ali Al-Kori – Sana’a University – Principal Supervisor and Committee Member.
- Abdu Ali Al-Hittar – Hodeidah University – External Examiner and Committee Member.
The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a program based on the Academic Cognitive Approach in developing reading comprehension skills and generative thinking skills among secondary school students in the Capital Secretariat, Sana’a.
The study produced several key findings, including:
- Statistically significant differences were found between the mean scores of students in the experimental and control groups on the post-test of reading comprehension skills, attributable to the use of the program and in favor of the experimental group.
- Statistically significant differences were found between the mean scores of students in the experimental group on the pre- and post-tests of reading comprehension skills, in favor of the post-test, with a large effect size of 0.701.
- Statistically significant differences were found between the mean scores of students in the experimental and control groups on the post-test of generative thinking skills, in favor of the experimental group.
The study recommended that curriculum planners and designers give greater attention to activities that stimulate thinking and foster creativity based on text comprehension and problem-solving through the Academic Cognitive Approach among secondary school students.
It also recommended training Arabic language teachers to use the Academic Cognitive Approach in teaching, enabling them to apply it with students across different stages of general education.
The defense session was attended by a number of academics, researchers, and postgraduate students, as well as the researcher’s colleagues and family members.
