Master’s Degree Awarded to Ms. Mounia Shamsher from Faculty of Dentistry

Ms. Mounia Mahmoud Ali Shamsher was awarded a Master degree in with an overall grade of (Excellent) and an average of (95%), for her thesis, titled “The Association of Oral Lichen Planus with Hypothyroidism in a Sample of Yemeni Patients,” which was submitted to Department of Oral Medicine, Periodontics, Diagnostics and Oral Radiology, Faculty of Dentistry – Sana’a University. The MA thesis defense was held on Sunday, August 17, 2025, corresponding to Safar 23, 1447 Hijri.
The MA Viva-voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Post-Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following members:

The thesis aimed to examine the relationship between oral lichen planus (OLP) and hypothyroidism among Yemeni patients, determine the prevalence of systemic diseases in OLP patients, and identify additional risk factors.
Key findings of the thesis indicated that there is a significant association between OLP and hypothyroidism, concluding that Yemeni patients with OLP have a 4.4 times higher risk of hypothyroidism, particularly among older females. The study did not find a significant association with smoking or Qat chewing, but it did identify gastrointestinal disorders as the most common co-existing condition.
The thesis concluded with several recommendations, including increasing the sample size for future research, conducting thyroid peroxidase antibody tests, and implementing regular patient follow-ups—at least once a year for asymptomatic lesions and twice a year for symptomatic lesions.
The thesis was examined and recommended by the Viva-Voce Committee for acceptance and approval. The thesis defense was well-attended by a distinguished audience of academics, researchers, students, and interested individuals, alongside the candidate’s colleagues and family members.
