The study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of Yemeni parents and adolescents regarding orthodontic treatment, examine the impact of demographic and economic factors on their perceptions and preferences, and identify the challenges they face in accessing orthodontic care.
The research yielded several notable findings summarized as follows:
- Parents and adolescents demonstrated a moderate level of general knowledge about orthodontic treatment, with mothers’ educational level positively influencing awareness.
- Parents showed more favorable attitudes toward orthodontic treatment compared to adolescents, whose attitudes were generally moderate.
- Positive attitudes were particularly evident among females, educated and employed mothers, and high-income families.
- Financial constraints and lack of knowledge were identified as the main barriers to seeking orthodontic treatment.
In light of these findings, the researcher offered several key recommendations, including:
- Promoting public awareness of orthodontic care.
- Integrating orthodontic education into school health programs.
- Reforming health policies to provide free or subsidized orthodontic services and incorporating them into health insurance schemes.
- Conducting broader longitudinal studies to track changes in knowledge and attitudes following awareness programs over time.
The defense session was attended by a number of academics, researchers, colleagues and the researcher’s family members.
