Master’s Degree Awarded to Ms. Samia Abdulmajid Dawood in Orthodontics

Ms. Samia Abdulmajid Ali Dawood was awarded a Master’s degree in the major of Orthodontics for her thesis titled, “Evaluation of Intrusion Effects of Mini-screws for Treatment of Gummy Smile Using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography,” which was submitted to the Department of Orthodontics, Paediatric, and Preventive Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry- Sana’a University. The defense was held on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
The MA Viva-voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Post-Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:
| # | Committee Members | Designation | University | Position |
| 1 | Assoc. Prof. Khaled Ahmed Al-Dharai | External examiner | Thamar University | Member |
| 2 | Assoc. Prof. Fouad Lotf Al-Mutarreb | Internal Examiner | Sana’a University | Chair |
| 3 | Prof. Ghamdan Abdullah Al-Harazi | Main supervisor | Sana’a University | Member |
The study aimed to:
- Evaluate the effect of Mini-screws for the treatment of a gummy smile.
- Analyze skeletal and dental changes, deep bite correction, gingival smile reduction, intrusion rate, and external apical root resorption.
The main findings of the study included:
- The use of mini-screws allows for the successful correction of both the gummy smile and deep bite.
- Significant retraction of the maxillary incisors was observed by 1.32 ± 0.34 mm relative to the Vertical Alar Plane (p<0.05).
- Root resorption was noted to be higher in the quadrants (lateral segments).
The study concluded with several key recommendations:
- This method provides favorable results when patients require avoidance of posterior anchorage for the treatment of deep bite and gummy smile cases.
- Use Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) for accurate treatment planning in complex gummy smile cases.
- Closely monitor the occurrence of external apical root resorption.
The study was examined and recommended by the MA Viva-Voce Committee for acceptance and approval. The defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, students, and interested individuals, in addition to the candidate’s colleagues and family members.
