Sana’a University Convenes High-Level Meeting to Advance Doctor of Medicine (MD) Programs and Drive WFME International Accreditation

SANA’A, YEMEN — June 22, 2026 — Prof. Mohammed Al-Bukhaiti, Sana’a University Rector, chaired an expansive high-level meeting today at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences to chart the strategic development of the university’s Doctor of Medicine (MD) postgraduate programs. The convention, focused on accelerating the university’s drive toward international academic accreditation, was attended by Prof. Adel Al-Matari, Chairman of the Academic Accreditation Council, and Prof. Mohammed Al-Shehari, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, alongside vice deans, clinical residency directors, department chairs, and steering committee members.
The administrative council reviewed critical pillars aimed at elevating clinical doctoral pathways, addressing current hurdles in residency training, and exploring innovative structural frameworks aligned with contemporary global medical education paradigms. Key sessions focused heavily on updating curricula across clinical specialties, enhancing scientific research methodologies, and mapping research output directly to national public health demands.
A central focus of the deliberations was satisfying the stringent requirements of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). “Securing WFME accreditation is our gateway to global recognition,” stated Sana’a University Rector, Dr. Mohamed Al-Bukhaiti. “This is not a bureaucratic formality; it is a profound institutional investment in the global competitiveness of our medical graduates within the regional and international healthcare landscape.”
Dr. Al-Bukhaiti emphasized that achieving these milestones requires unified operational execution, including the integration of simulation-based medical education, robust clinical training infrastructure, and sustainable partnerships with teaching hospitals. He further advocated for embedding a culture of continuous self-assessment and total quality management across all instructional layers. This international alignment, he noted, will pave the way for Yemeni doctoral graduates to secure prestigious specialized medical fellowships abroad.
Prof. Adel Al-Matari, Chairman of the Academic Accreditation Council, commended Sana’a University’s rigorous proactive engagement, affirming that benchmarking MD programs against WFME criteria has transitioned from an academic luxury to an absolute necessity for ensuring the quality of healthcare graduates. He pledged that the Accreditation Council remains a committed operational partner throughout this developmental roadmap.
Furthermore, Dr. Mohammed Al-Shehari, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, stated that the session succeeded in generating practical, action-oriented recommendations to upgrade the clinical environment in teaching hospitals and modernize medical research outcomes to make them more impactful. He reiterated the faculty’s commitment to building a comprehensive educational model that bridges rigorous academic theory with clinical excellence.
This extensive convention highlights Sana’a University’s broader strategic vision to synchronize its academic ecosystems with international standards, consolidating its leadership position in medical education and scientific research within the region.
