About the Faculty
Overview about Faculty: Establishment and Development :
The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences was established in the early nineties of the twentieth century in the heart of the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, in accordance with the Ministerial Resolution of 1983. It is considered the first and largest medical Faculty in Yemen. It was established in circumstances characterized by high-level developments and challenges in the philosophy of higher education in the face of the challenges of development and the race to meet the needs of our society aspiring to improve its conditions with scarce capabilities and a steady increase in population. It had a great impact on all aspects of life, especially the aspects. Educational and health – The Faculty came in these circumstances to provide the Yemeni community and neighboring countries with outputs that contribute to addressing their health problems and are an addition, a product, and an achievement of the country’s national vision. Accordingly, the first steps of construction were a conscious study of the characteristics of our country, its needs, and knowledge of the level of its capabilities. We have moved forward and are still pursuing development at steady pace. In the academic year 1983/1984, the first batch was accepted into the Medicine and Surgery program, and their training began in the old buildings on the university campus with the help of a large part of the Faculty of Science laboratories. The project to build the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in its current location was designed with the support of the sister State of Kuwait, and the implementation process began. The project to establish the Faculty and develop the final designs after the implementation agreement was signed on February 5, 1985 AD. Then the Faculty moved to its new building after its completion in the academic year 1989/1990 AD, according to which the medicine, surgery, and laboratory medicine programs were transferred from the Faculty of Science to the current building . During the period 1983-2000, the Faculty included five study programs: medicine and surgery – laboratory medicine – nursing – pharmacy – dentistry. In the year 2001/2002, the pharmacy and dentistry programs became independent from the Faculty, each becoming an independent Faculty. In the year 2020-2021, it established five modern programs: anesthesia – therapeutic nutrition and diets – radiology and diagnostic medical imaging – physical therapy, prosthetics and orthotics, in addition to the three previous programs. Believing that this was what the country needed first, and then that it was the most appropriate situation to make the most of our current capabilities at that time, then the Faculty’s of pharmacy and dentistry became independent after they became qualified to become independent Faculty’s. The first class of the faculty graduated from the laboratory medicine program in 1979, and the first class graduated from the medicine and surgery program in 1990 and the graduate nursing program in 1993. Then the process of success and giving continued to graduate until the year 2022 AD (10,578) male and female graduates distinguished by their high practical and scientific competence in all the Faculty’s various programs ( Among them are 5,744 graduates (male and female) from the Medicine and Surgery program until the year 2020, which made them a major demand for the local and regional labor market, where many of our outputs are located.
