Scientific Seminar on the Challenges and Complications of the Insulin-Carbohydrate Gap in Type 1 Diabetes Patients

The Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Sana’a organized a scientific seminar titled “The Challenges and Complications Resulting from the Gap Between Insulin Doses and Carbohydrate Intake in Type 1 Diabetes Patients.” This event was held under the auspices and supervision of the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Khaled Al-Khamisi, with the presence of Dr. Abdul Karim Al-Abedi, a member of the guiding committee at the faculty, and participation from a group of doctors and specialists in the fields of nutrition and diabetes.
The seminar began with a verse from the Holy Quran, followed by the Dean’s welcoming remarks to all attendees. He emphasized the importance of this specialty, the educational process, and the medical services provided, as well as the role of clinical nutrition specialists. He also expressed gratitude to Shafaqo Company for supporting the seminar and to the organizing committee.
Dr. Khalil Saleh, a clinical nutrition specialist at the faculty, started the seminar with a lecture on the gap between insulin doses and carbohydrate intake in several hospitals.
The seminar was chaired by Prof. Mohammed Ahmed Omar Bamshmos, Professor of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sana’a. Several main topics were discussed, including:
– Types of insulin and the differences between them, and their role in regulating blood sugar levels.
– The relationship between insulin and carbohydrates, and the importance of carbohydrate counting for regulating insulin doses.
– Challenges in regulating blood sugar levels, such as the risks of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, and the impact of various factors on insulin sensitivity.
– Proven methods for determining doses, including fixed doses versus variable doses based on individual needs.
– The importance of collaboration between doctors and nutrition specialists to stabilize blood sugar levels and improve patients’ quality of life.
– Complications arising from the imbalance between insulin and carbohydrates, and their impact on health in both the short and long term.
