Master’s Degree Awarded to Mr. Mohammed Ali Al-Rashidi in Arabic Literature and Criticism

Mr.Mohammed Ali Hussein Al-Rashidiwas awarded a Master’s Degree in Arabic Literature and Criticismwith excellent and a grade of (95) for his thesis titled: Self-Perception and the Image of the Other in Contemporary Yemeni Poetry: A Study in Discourse Analysis Semiotics,which was submitted tothe Department of Arabic Language, Faculty of Languages– Sana’a University. The MA defense was held on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
The MA Viva-voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:

The thesis aimed to:
- Explore manifestations of self-perception and the image of the other in contemporary Yemeni poetry, with a focus on physical and sensory dimensions.
- Analyze how these perceptions are embodied amid political and social challenges.
- Provide a critical reading based on semiotic analysis mechanisms to uncover the deep structures shaping contemporary Yemeni poetic discourse.
The study yielded several key findings summarized as follows:
- Contemporary Yemeni poetic discourse reflects deep contradictions, demonstrating how poetic identity is shaped through the struggle between the self and the other under current political and social conditions.
- The semiotic approach plays a significant role in analyzing these structures and contributes to a deeper understanding of contemporary poetic texts.
In light of these findings, the researcher recommended the following:
- Expanding semiotic studies in Yemeni literature and strengthening scholarly interest in this field.
- Incorporating semiotics into academic curricula to enhance literary and critical analysis tools.
The defense session was attended by a number of academics, researchers, students, colleagues, and the researcher’s family.
