Master’s Degree Awarded to Mr. Mohammed Noaman in Pharmacology and Therapeutics

Mr. Mohammed Abdu Noaman Abbas was awarded a Master’s Degree with distinction in Pharmacology and Therapeutics for his thesis titled: Evaluation of Anti-diabetic Activity of Vonoprazan and its Synergistic Effect with Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitor and Metformin in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes in Rats, which was submitted to the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences– Sana’a University. The MA defense was held on Monday, May 18, 2026.
The MA Viva-voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:
| # | Committee Members | Designation | Position |
| 1 | Associate Prof. Khaled Mohammed Al-Akhali | External Examiner | Chair |
| 2 | Prof. Mohammed Abdulrahman Al-Khawlani | Main Supervisor | Member |
| 3 | Prof. Abdulmalik Abdullah Abu Dunia | Internal Examiner | Member |
The thesis aimed to:
- Evaluate the potential antidiabetic effects of Vonoprazan and investigate its combined effect with Metformin and Sitagliptin in a rat model of type 2 diabetes induced by a high-fat diet and streptozotocin.
The study yielded several key findings summarized as follows:
- Treatment with Vonoprazan, Metformin, Sitagliptin, and their drug combinations significantly improved glycemic control, reduced fasting blood glucose levels, and lowered insulin resistance indices compared to the diabetic control group.
- All treatment regimens contributed to improving dyslipidemia by reducing total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein levels, while increasing high-density lipoprotein levels.
- Combination therapy, particularly the combination of Metformin and Vonoprazan, demonstrated superior efficacy in improving metabolic indicators and restoring the normal histological structure of the pancreas compared to monotherapy.
In light of these findings, the researcher recommended the following:
- Conducting future experimental studies involving the measurement of oxidative stress and molecular biomarkers to support the proposed mechanisms underlying the drug effects.
- Carrying out long-term preclinical studies to evaluate the sustained safety and efficacy of Vonoprazan alone or in combination with Metformin or Sitagliptin, and expanding clinical studies to explore its potential repurposing as an adjunctive treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus.
The defense session was attended by a number of academics, researchers, students, colleagues, and the researcher’s family.
