The study aimed to evaluate serum zinc and copper levels and the copper-to-zinc ratio in Yemeni patients with sickle cell anemia, and to assess the relationship between these levels and vaso-occlusive crises.
The main findings of the study showed:
-
A significant decrease in serum zinc levels among sickle cell anemia patients compared with healthy individuals.
-
A notable increase in the copper-to-zinc ratio, indicating an imbalance in these essential trace elements.
In light of these findings, the researcher recommended the following:
-
Regular monitoring of zinc and copper levels in patients with sickle cell anemia to assess their nutritional status.
-
Investigating the potential benefits of zinc supplementation and its role in reducing vaso-occlusive episodes.
-
Monitoring the copper-to-zinc ratio as a possible biomarker for evaluating disease severity.
-
Enhancing patient and family awareness programs regarding the importance of these trace elements and their role in managing complications of the disease.
The defense session was attended by faculty members, researchers, students, colleagues, and the researcher’s family.
