Master’s Degree Awarded to Ms. Sama’a Mohammed Al-Absi in Medical Microbiology

Ms. Sama’a Mohammed Saleh Al-Absi was awarded a Master’s Degree in Medical Microbiology with distinction for her thesis titled: Association between Helicobacter pylori and Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Sana’a City: A Case–Control Study, which was submitted to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences– Sana’a University. The MA defense was held on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.

The MA Viva-voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:

The study aimed to determine the relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) among patients in Sana’a City. It also sought to evaluate associated risk factors and investigate predisposing factors contributing to the acquisition of the infection.

The study yielded a number of key findings summarized as follows:

• A strong association between H. pylori infection and the occurrence of IBS symptoms.

• The eradication of the bacterium may lead to improvement in IBS-related symptoms, suggesting a potential therapeutic benefit.

In light of these findings, the researcher recommended:

• Conducting further studies using more advanced diagnostic techniques, such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA).

• Exploring behavioral factors that may contribute to the relationship between H. pylori infection and IBS.

• Expanding epidemiological studies to include other governorates, while taking economic, environmental, and genetic factors into consideration
