Master’s Degree Awarded to Mr. Mohammed Basheer Mohammed in Geology
Mr. Mohammed Basheer Mohammed Hussein Al-Shami was awarded a Master’s degree in Geology with distinction for his thesis titled: Sequence Stratigraphy of Amran Group Rocks, Dhi Bain Area –Amran Governorate, which was submitted to the Faculty of Petroleum and Natural Resources – Sana’a University. The MA defense was held on Monday, August 25, 2025.

The study aimed to analyze the lithological and depositional characteristics of Amran Group rocks and to establish a stratigraphic framework for the studied well DB1, based on microfacies analysis of 109 thin sections. It also sought to determine the geological age of Amran Group in the study area and to assess its economic significance.
The Field studies included the identification of the geological setting and lithological units of the area. The economic evaluation of Amran Group rocks in the region indicated their potential as a prospective site for zinc, lead, silver, and barite mining.
The study yielded several key findings, including:
-
Amran Group rocks in the study area consist of thick to medium-bedded limestone, argillaceous limestone, and brecciated limestone, interbedded with thin marl or shale layers.
-
Based on petrographic analysis, 17 microfacies types were identified within the studied section, representing deposits across four distinct facies belts.
-
Sequence stratigraphy analysis revealed the presence of ten third-order depositional sequences.
-
Microfossil evidence indicated that Amran Group in the studied area belongs to the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian–Tithonian age.
The study offered several recommendations, including:
-
Reassessing other drilled wells in the area and conducting geochemical analyses of brecciated limestone layers.
-
Drilling additional exploratory wells to fully penetrate the complete Amran Group succession.
-
Conducting detailed stratigraphic studies of Amran Group rocks in the study area.
The defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, friends, colleagues, and the researcher’s family members
