Sana’a – Wednesday, December 24 2025
The Faculty of Petroleum and Natural Resources organized its third scientific and research lecture event on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, with the participation of Prof. Hisham Naji, Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences, and Dr. Maryam Taher, Coordinator of the Department’s Activities. The event brought together a number of students from different academic levels and disciplines and was held in coordination with the Faculty’s Quality Management Office.
The event forms part of the third environmental activity scheduled for the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. It featured a scientific presentation entitled “Natural Reserves”, prepared and delivered by students Ali Abdullah Ali Ahmed Salman and Mohammed Abdulmonaem Ahmed Lutfallah.
The presentation introduced natural reserves in Yemen through several key themes, including the concept of protected areas, their objectives, and the criteria for their designation. It also reviewed the most prominent natural reserves in the country, notably the Socotra Archipelago and its protected sites, Utmah Reserve, Bura’a, Hawf, the Northern Kamaran Island Reserve, and the wetlands of the city of Aden.
The presenters highlighted the rich biological and environmental diversity of these reserves, the distinctive characteristics of each site, and the threats they face as a result of human activities in surrounding areas. The presentation concluded with introductory video clips on Detwah Reserve in Socotra and the Northern Kamaran Island Reserve.
At the conclusion of the event, Prof. Hisham Naji commended the efforts of the two students and the organizers, emphasizing the importance of environmental awareness. He also noted that other natural reserves were not covered in the presentation, as it focused exclusively on officially designated protected areas.
