Field Scientific Trip for Female Students of the Faculty of Petroleum and Natural Resources to Enhance Applied Skills

The Faculty of Petroleum and Natural Resources – Female Students Sector at Sana’a University, in cooperation with the General Administration of Student Activities and the University Student Forum, organized a field scientific trip for female students of the faculty from various levels and departments, including the departments of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Mineral Resources, with the aim of enhancing the applied aspect and linking theoretical knowledge with field applications.
The itinerary of the trip included: Sana’a – Amran – Kahlan – Ain Ali in Wadi Sharas – Return to Sana’a, under the academic supervision of Prof. Dr. Khaled Khanbari, Dr. Dr. Ibrahim Al-Akahli, Dr. Maryam Taher, and Engineer Manal Al-Sharaei.
The trip focused on studying the Yemeni stratigraphic succession and conducting practical applications on rock outcrops through a number of geological stations.
At the North Al-Sitain station, a volcanic dike in the sandstone belonging to the Tawilah Group was observed, and the female students trained on using the geological hammer, magnifying glass, and geological compass, in addition to taking strike and dip measurements, and identifying Tertiary and Quaternary volcanics and the reasons for their distribution within the rock formations in Yemen.
At the Al-Azragayn landfill and the Amran Cement Factory, Dr. Maryam Taher addressed the potential environmental impacts associated with them on the population and the surrounding environment.
The trip also included studying the Amran Group Limestones, where their economic and geological importance was introduced as one of the important formations in the petroleum system, due to their porosity and fractures that may facilitate the presence of hydrocarbon fluids.
In the Kohlan Formation (Kohlan Sandstone), the female students learned about sandstones rich in iron oxides and their environmental and depositional significance, while the Akbra Shale station addressed its role as one of the important source rocks in the formation and generation of oil.
The geological stations concluded in Wadi Sharas – Ain Ali – Hajjah, where basement rocks, which usually include metamorphic and igneous rocks, were examined, along with an explanation of the depositional environment and economic importance of the formations that were studied, helping to form an integrated picture of the geological column of the trip area.
During the trip, dikes and vertical joints in the rocks were also identified as indicators of rock weakness zones and their associated importance in geological and engineering studies.
The trip included training the female students on using the Global Positioning System (GPS) device to record coordinates and link them with field data, in addition to collecting representative rock samples of the various formations and documenting them systematically, in preparation for laboratory examination and linking the results of field analysis with laboratory analysis.
At the conclusion of the trip, the faculty’s female students expressed their thanks and appreciation to the leadership of Sana’a University and the General Administration of Student Activities for the attention they pay to scientific and field activities and providing the necessary requirements for field trips, which contributes to developing the students’ skills and enhancing their applied knowledge in the fields of oil and gas, earth sciences, environment, and mineral resources.
