Tuesday, Dhu al-Qa’dah 8, 1446 Hijri, corresponding to May 6, 2025.
Horticulture and Biotechnology Department at the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Sana’a University, held Seminar 2 for Mr. Osama Yahya Ahmed Al-Dimashqi.
During the session, the candidate presented a detailed overview of his Master’s thesis proposal entitled:
“Study of Some Factors Affecting Micropropagation in Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) CV Baraka.”
The MA thesis proposal is supervised by Prof. Hassan Abduljabbar Al-Dubai, Professor of Plant Breeding and Improvement and Seed Production, and Assoc. Prof. Mohammed Saeed Al-Sama’ee, Associate Professor of Viral Diseases and Tissue Culture.
In his presentation, the candidate covered the tools and materials utilized in the study, in addition to the key findings reached. The presentation included an explanation of the study’s significance, the research problem, the research methodology, previous studies, the main objectives of the study, and the working methods followed in conducting his scientific experiments.
The findings obtained through a series of laboratory experiments in the Plant Tissue Culture Unit were also reviewed, focusing on three main aspects:
The effect of disinfectant type and exposure periods on the surface sterilization of tuber buds.
The role of nutrient medium type on the production of potato plantlets using micropropagation technology.
The effect of hormonal concentrations in nutrient media on the production of potato plantlets using micropropagation technology.
The candidate pointed out that, in light of the country’s move towards achieving self-sufficiency, the micropropagation of potato plantlets using plant tissue culture technology secures genetic resources for the local production of potato seeds as an alternative to imports.
Following the presentation, faculty members and attendees engaged in a rigorous scientific discussion of the findings, providing their comments and necessary recommendations.
This session (Seminar 2) is a fundamental requirement that the candidate must pass to obtain the department’s approval on the study’s findings before proceeding to the final defense of the MA thesis, during which the defense and viva-voce committee will be formed.
The session was attended by the Head and faculty members of the department, as well as the Integrity Committee, a number of faculty members from other departments, and postgraduate students from the faculty, in an interactive scientific atmosphere characterized by academic enrichment and constructive discussions.
