Faculty of Agriculture, Food, and Environment at Sana’a University Launches Experimental Field to Evaluate Soybean Varieties

In a step highlighting its focus on applied research and expanded field training, the Faculty of Agriculture, Food, and Environment at Sana’a University launched an experimental agricultural field for cultivating and evaluating several soybean varieties. The initiative is under the scientific and field supervision of the Department of Crop Science and Pastures.
The project aligns with the faculty’s strategy to advance field trials for economically and nutritionally vital crops. By conducting scientific assessments of soybean performance under local environmental and soil conditions, the project aims to establish data-driven benchmarks for identifying optimal varieties for regional production.
The field trials focus on monitoring crop growth stages, evaluating agronomic and yield traits, and assessing environmental adaptability. The data gathered will support ongoing scientific research, academic studies, and refined crop management techniques. Concurrently, the site serves as an educational and training ground for students in the Department of Crop Science and Pastures, offering hands-on involvement in planting, crop care, field monitoring, and data collection.
Soybeans were selected for their high nutritional and economic value, as well as their role as legumes in diversifying crop rotation and improving resource efficiency. Dr. Jalal Kulaib, Head of the Department of Crop Science and Pastures, noted that field monitoring will continue throughout the growing season to document performance metrics for future studies and curriculum enhancement. This trial reflects Sana’a University’s dedication to aligning higher education with agricultural sector needs, fostering applied research, and supporting local food security.
