Faculty of Agriculture, Food, and Environment at Sana’a University Begins Sorghum Harvest to Boost Local Feed Production

The Faculty of Agriculture, Food, and Environment at Sana’a University has commenced harvesting approximately six hectares of sorghum at its educational farm. The initiative supports farm resource development and local animal feed production for the university’s livestock units.
The harvest is part of a broader strategy to transform the educational farm into an integrated training, research, and production facility. The harvested sorghum will serve as forage for cattle and sheep, reducing reliance on external feed supplies and lowering production costs.
To further strengthen livestock operations, the faculty recently added two Holstein cows—a breed recognized for high milk yields—to its dairy unit, expanding practical training opportunities in herd management and dairy production. Combining expanded forage cultivation with livestock enhancement establishes a sustainable cycle on the farm that incorporates feed production, animal care, and byproduct utilization.
The harvest also provides students with hands-on experience in every stage of forage production, from soil preparation and planting to harvesting and feed management. Dr. Hisham Al-Jabali, the Faculty Dean, stated that revitalizing the educational farm remains a key priority to create a dynamic learning environment that serves students, supports research, and contributes to national agricultural sustainability.
