Ahmed Hameed Omar Earns Master’s Degree with Distinction in International Development

Ahmed Hameed Omar has been awarded a Master’s degree with distinction in International Development from the Comprehensive Development Research Center at Sana’a University. His thesis, titled “The Role of Electronic Media in Enhancing Diplomatic Negotiation Practices,” focuses on the pivotal role of modern media in peacebuilding efforts, with Yemen as a case study. The defense took place on Sunday, November 24, 2024.

The examination was overseen by a distinguished panel, chaired by Professor Hassan Abdullah Dujra as the external examiner, alongside Professor Saleh Mohammed Hameed, the thesis supervisor, and Associate Professor Zaid Ali Al-Warith, the internal examiner.

In his research, Omar explored how electronic media shapes diplomatic negotiations, particularly in a conflict-ridden context like Yemen. His findings revealed that 85.29% of surveyed Yemeni diplomats believe external interventions have intensified the country’s internal conflicts. Political negotiations between conflicting parties emerged as the most commonly used method for peacebuilding, cited by 68.28% of respondents.

The study also highlighted a significant correlation between electronic media’s focus on national issues and its impact on diplomatic negotiations. However, no strong link was found between diplomats’ awareness of peacebuilding and their negotiation practices. Notably, the research identified a significant relationship between electronic media and the various stages of negotiations aimed at achieving peace.

Omar’s recommendations emphasized the need for modern electronic media to play a more proactive role in facilitating negotiations, fostering agreements to end violence, and supporting sustainable peace initiatives.

The defense attracted a large audience of academics, researchers, students, and Omar’s friends and family, who celebrated his academic excellence and the relevance of his work to the field of international development and peacebuilding.
