Faculty of Medicine Convenes Expanded Meeting to Advance WFME International Academic Accreditation

As part of its ongoing efforts to elevate the quality of medical education and meet global benchmarks, the leadership of the Faculty of Medicine held an expanded meeting chaired by the Faculty Dean, Dr. Mohammed Al-Shehari.
The session was attended by Dr. Anwar Al-Mughalles, Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs and Hospitals, and Dr. Ahmed Mugahed, Vice Dean for Quality, alongside members of the steering committee, several medical department chairs, and standards coordinators. The meeting focused on reviewing the progress made toward achieving international academic accreditation in alignment with the standards of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
During the meeting, attendees conducted a detailed review of progress reports regarding the implementation of accreditation standards. Participants evaluated key achievements made during the recent period, addressed existing gaps and challenges, and proposed practical solutions with specific timelines to accelerate progress and ensure full compliance with international standards.
National expert Dr. Saleh Bahaj delivered a comprehensive presentation on the strategic dimensions of international academic accreditation. Dr. Bahaj emphasized that adhering to WFME standards goes beyond meeting formal requirements; it demands a genuine transformation of the medical education system. This includes developing curricula, enhancing faculty capabilities, advancing teaching and assessment methods, and improving the clinical training environment in line with global best practices.
He also highlighted the importance of building an integrated institutional system for quality assurance based on continuous self-assessment, data collection and analysis, and the measurement of learning outcomes. This approach, he noted, will drive sustainable improvement and bolster the college’s regional and international competitiveness.
The role of standards coordinators was also discussed, recognizing them as the cornerstone of the accreditation process. The meeting underscored the need to strengthen coordination among academic departments, unify efforts to ensure the integration of supporting files and documentation, and maintain accuracy and transparency in presenting data and indicators to accurately reflect the college’s academic and institutional performance.
Dean Dr. Mohammed Al-Shehari praised the extensive efforts of the working team, commending the high sense of commitment and responsibility demonstrated by the standards coordinators and steering committee members. He emphasized that the achievements to date represent a significant step forward on the path toward WFME international accreditation.
Dr. Al-Shehari explained that the current phase, despite its challenges and pressures, is a pivotal turning point in the faculty’s history. He noted that achieving international academic accreditation under WFME standards will mark a paradigm shift in medical education quality. It will also bolster community trust in the faculty’s graduates and open up broader opportunities for them both regionally and internationally.
He added that this project is not merely an administrative goal but an institutional commitment that reflects Sana’a University’s vision to build an advanced educational system based on quality and excellence. He stressed that success in this endeavor requires collective efforts, teamwork, and an openness to pioneering international experiences.
In his closing remarks, the Dean stressed the need to double efforts in the coming phase. He urged attendees to focus on completing all accreditation requirements, including gathering evidence and documentation, activating evaluation and follow-up systems, and strengthening partnerships with teaching hospitals. He also called for continuing training and professional development programs for faculty members to ensure full compliance with global quality standards.
The attendees reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a high pace of work to achieve the ultimate goal of obtaining WFME international academic accreditation, cementing the Faculty’s position as a leading institution in medical education.
