Department of Translation Hosts Academic and Cultural Event on the History of Arabization and Language Evolution

The Department of Translation at the Faculty of Languages hosted a specialized academic and cultural event titled “The History of Arabization and Language Evolution.” Organized by third-year translation students, the event was held under the supervision of Dr. Abdulwadood Annuzaili, Head of the Department of English and instructor of the Arabization course.
The gathering brought together key university administrators, faculty members, and a large turnout of students. Notable attendees included Dr. Mujeeb Qasem, Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Academic Affairs and Head of Department of Translation; Dr. Akram Al-Jahfali, Vice Dean for Student Affairs; Dr. Khaled Al-Shamari, Head of the Department of Arabic; Dr. Yahya Obaid, Head of the Department of Persian; Dr. Tareq Al-Wahbani, Student Activities Director; Dr. Abbas Motahar; and Lecturer Abdulrabb Banyan.
Designed as an experiential application of the third-year “Arabization” curriculum, the event transformed classroom concepts into an interactive program featuring academic showcases, cultural presentations, and educational competitions that highlighted students’ mastery of theoretical and practical translation frameworks.
Student presentations traced the historical evolution of Arabization and translation across major epochs—from pre-Islamic times, through the golden age of Islamic scientific translation, to the modern era. Presentations spotlighted pivotal historical milestones and honored prominent scholars and translators who facilitated intercultural knowledge transfer.
Discussions focused on the historical role of translation in societal advancement and the flourishing of Arab-Islamic civilization through the movement of philosophy, science, and literature. Students examined the impact of cross-linguistic contact on the expansion of Arabic vocabulary, syntax, and modern technical terminology.
Key topics covered included:
- Arabization Strategies and Methods: Loanwords, neologisms, derivation, and semantic extension.
- Institutional Language Planning: The role of Arabic Language Academies in coining scientific terminology.
- Contemporary Issues: The position of the Arabic language in the face of rapid technological and scientific advancements.
The program featured interactive quizzes, open discussions, and collaborative activities designed to move away from traditional lecture formats. By facilitating peer engagement and dynamic research presentations, the event reinforced team building, problem-solving, and critical inquiry.
At the conclusion of the event, third-year students honored Dr. Abdulwadood Annuzaili for his dedication to teaching the course and supervising the initiative. Recognition was also extended to Dr. Mujeeb Qasem for supporting departmental academic activities, and to Dr. Tareq Al-Wahbani for his contributions to student cultural programs. Additionally, top-performing third-year students and members of the student academic committee were awarded certificates of achievement for their academic excellence and organizational leadership.
