Ms. Manar Ezzaddin Ali Al-Ahdal was awarded a Master’s degree in the major of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with an average of (Excellent) for her thesis titled “Microbiology of Tissue Reaction between Polytetrafluoroethylene Versus Silk Sutures after Surgical Removal of Bilateral Lower Impacted Third Molars in Yemeni Patients,” which was submitted to Faculty of Dentistry – Sana’a University. The defense was held on Thursday, October 9, 2025.
The MA Viva-voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Post-Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:
| # | Committee Members | Designation | University | Position |
| 1 | Assoc. Prof. Ahmed Saleh Yahya Al-Khatari | External examiner | Thamar University | Chair |
| 2 | Dr. Yaser Ahmed Salem Al-Rubaidi | Internal Examiner | Sana’a University | Member |
| 3 | Assoc. Prof. Taghreed Ahmed Mohammed Al-Kebsi | Main supervisor | Sana’a University | Member |
The thesis aimed to compare the microbiology of the tissue reaction to Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sutures versus silk sutures after the surgical extraction of impacted mandibular third molars.
Key findings of the thesis included that the Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) suture material demonstrated a low capacity for bacterial adhesion and resulted in fewer post-operative complications compared to silk sutures.
The thesis concluded with several important recommendations, most notably:
- Conducting studies on a larger sample of patients to achieve more precise results.
- Carrying out new studies using a novel scale to assess inflammation.
- Isolating and identifying both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to determine their effect on surgical outcomes.
The thesis was examined and recommended by the MA Viva-Voce Committee for acceptance and approval. The defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, students, and interested individuals, in addition to the candidate’s colleagues and family members.
