PhD Degree Awarded to Mr. Yusuf Mehras in Quranic Exegesis and Science

Mr. Yusuf Ahmed Nasser Mehras was awarded a PhD degree in Islamic Studies – Quranic Exegesis and Sciences for his dissertation titled: Al-Jawhar Al-Asil Al-Mukhtasar min Ma’alim Al-Tanzil by Scholar Abdullah Abdulwali Mohammed Al-Ward (13th Century AH): A Critical Study and Investigation from the Book of Marriage to the Book of Obedience, which was submitted to the Department of Islamic Studies, Faculty of Arts and Humanities – Sana’a University. The dissertation defense was held on Saturday, August 18, 2025.
The PhD Viva-Voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:

The study aimed to highlight the uniqueness of Al-Jawhar Al-Asil Al-Mukhtasar min Ma’alim Al-Tanzil by scholar Abdullah Abdulwali Al-Ward, particularly in presenting Quranic exegesis through thematic classifications aligned with various jurisprudential and scholarly chapters.
The dissertation yielded the following findings:
- The scholar Abdullah Abdulwali Al-Ward was a prominent Yemeni jurist and scholar known for his piety and asceticism.
- His work, Al-Jawhar Al-Asil, is one of the significant contributions to jurisprudential and thematic Tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis).
- The author demonstrated a remarkable organizational structure and innovative classifications in the composition of his book.
- The abundance of classifications and diverse approaches within the work underscores its scholarly value and calls for further study and preservation.
In light of these findings, the researcher recommended the following:
- Conducting comprehensive academic studies on the methodology adopted by Al-Ward in his book.
- Dedicating independent studies to Al-Ward’s opinions and preferences in his book Al-Jawhar Al-Asil.
- Undertaking comparative research on Al-Ward’s opinions and preferences in Al-Jawhar Al-Asil in relation to the jurisprudential thought of his contemporaries.
The dissertation defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, specialists, students, colleagues, and the researcher’s family.
